It occurs to me that I didn't tell you "Happy Birthday," so Happy Birthday! I was wondering how all the absinthe turned out for everyone who partook. I always wanted to try it but the smell alone makes me want to vomit even when sober so it never made it down the hatch.

well, let me tell you, if you think the smell is a turn-off, then don't ever, EVER taste it. the black licorice (anise) flavor is SO STRONG. also, it also tasted a little bit like dirt to me. it took me several minutes to get those few ounces down and the last gulp brought me pretty close to puking.

the only thing (besides the foul taste) that i really noticed about it was how quickly it made me feel flushed. i had to go outside when i finished, because i really was burning up. i don't know if i was actually flushed (no one said anything) but i would think that i was.

it didn't make me feel drunk, or anything else, but i did have it just after dinner and i couldn't stomach drinking anything else afterward.

so... i'm not a fan at all. and, like i said, if that smell bothers you, i think you'll have a hard time stomaching it too. if it had made me feel super drunk or trippy, i might still recommend it, but i wasn't that impressed.

Re: absinthe
My ex had a guy with absinthe over to his house a few times for after parties and I never did try it because of the stench; I abhor licorice. I walked back into the kitchen after leaving for the bathroom one night and the smell was disgustingly strong: turned out my friend Melody had taken a shot and immediately puked it up in the garbage can in the corner. Everyone else stayed up a lot later than I did last night but Justin later reported to me that those who had drank a lot of it just felt "giddy and giggly." I don't know where this idea that it makes people trip out comes from because I've yet to speak with anyone who's experienced it, even when it's been consumed in somewhat large quantities.
All the times I've been around the smell of it tells me that I'd probably not be able to drink anything after one shot either so it hardly seems worth it. I have a hard enough time with Jager.
