remember when

remember back when you were a kid
and the only things you worried about
were saturday morning cartoons
and whether or not to get sprinkles
on your ice cream sundae?

when changing friends
was like changing socks?
you did it almost everday,
and it probably mattered less.

when d.a.r.e. came to you school
and you learned about drugs for the first time?

when, after all that time and work,
you finally won first place
and your parents bought you ice cream
to celebrate?

when your dad said good job
and your mom said i love you?

i don't.
but i've got a lifetime of memories to forget.

Looking back now it's pretty easy to believe that everything was carefree when you were a kid, but when I look closer and try to remember...I realize that it was even more stressful than life is today.

For me, being a kid was really tough.

that's the thing
i don't think i was ever carefree. i spent my childhood worrying about my parents divorcing or going to jail. i thought for sure my mom was going to flip out and kill someone sooner or later. i felt like my siblings really, really hated me and didn't want me around. and no matter how hard i tried, no one ever said i was good enough for them.

when i was six, i felt like i had the stress and responsibilites of sixteen. i matured to adulthood before i was out of the third grade. i was too grown up to be a kid.

now it seems my age is surpassing my maturity. and all my peers think i'm the child. the funny thing is, i kind of like it.

so live another childhood now.
watch cartoons, go get a sundae with sprinkles, make new friends, be innocent of drugs, i'll buy you ice cream, and say good job and i love you!

but i know it's not the same. so have fun anyway! you can't change what happend back then, but you can do what you can to make yourself happy. i know i'm not really one to talk about making oneself happy, but you should realize that there are people who love and care about you.
